Username: Your nodephone number- 10 digits start with area code (08, 07, etc)

A God Among Men: Hard resetting the Samsung Omnia

I honestly have to bend on my knees & thank a blogger by the name of Jamesuk. After playing around with my phone a little bit to much, I installed a broken .cab file which wouldn’t let me into my ‘Settings’. Each time I went start>Settings my phone would restart. ANNOYING as I couldn’t sync, change any settings or do much at all! I couldn’t simply sync with the computer & hard reset as USB was turned off & I couldn’t remove the cab as I wasn’t able to access Remove Programs.

But after a few hours of pouring over forums & blogs, I almost gave up! They all mentioned 2 hidden ways of doing a hard reset. They are as follows:

If your phone is turned off, and won’t go past Omnia black screen
1. Hold the power on & call & end keys simultaenously for about 5 seconds.
Alternatively, turn on and when the Omnia screen appears, hold down the call & end keys.

If your phone is already turned on:
1. Hold down the call & end keys & TAP (not hold) the soft reset button hole.

Either method you choose with get to the same place, a black screen asking if you want to reset. Call will reset.

Ok, so why is Jamesuk such a legend? Because after at least 2 dozens attempts at me doing this, jamming my fingers down on the keypad trying to get it work, I stumbled upon his post.

He pointed out in his post that if you notice, when you hold down the Call & End keys, you also depress the middle button just the smallest amount. This will stop the hard reset. So instead of jamming your fingers down, press very very lightly only until you can just feel the click of the button, and on the outer side of the buttons.

I tried this, and it worked instantly. So thats how you hard reset the Samsung Omnia- properly.

Samsung Omnia Secret Settings

The Samsung Omnia (like most phones) has some hidden features that are more advanced tweaks than what most poeple realise. Be careful tweaking any of these settings though, as there is a possiblity of damaging your phone beyond repair (such as setting volume controls too high & blowing a speaker)

Omnia Secret Keys

There are many hidden settings for Omnia and I am showing you some of them after researching the data with other Omnia users and on the internet.

*#0206*8376263# – Shows a screen with the PDA/Phone version numbers, H/W and RFCalDate.

*#197328640# – Root debug menu

*#1546792*# – (Executes \Windows\AdminSettings.exe) Shows the Administrator Settings menu. In there:

1. Version – Shows a menu where you can access the version numbers for the PDA and the Software (redirects to the Settings Version applet)
2. Preconfiguration – Password is *#81230*#. Allows to preconfigure the Omnia Operator settings by changing the country and operator. Note: Changing this will hard-reset the device. This won’t lock the device with the specified operator.
3. Network-Call Setting:
1. Power On Attach: (Attach [default] or Detach) ???
2. Service Domain: (Combined [default], CS or PS) Changes which service domain to use.
3. Network mode: (Auto [default], GSM or WCDMA) Changes the data connexion mode. WCDMA is 3G.
4. Network order (Auto [default], GSM first, WCDMA first or No change) Changes which mode to try first when connecting, with Network Mode on Auto.
4. Internal – Password is unknown. I’m not sure what it does.

*#0002*28346# – Opens the Audio control utility, where you can adjust low-level volumes.

*#7465625# – (Executes \Windows\Personalize.exe %LOCK_STATUS_INFO) Shows the status of the Network, Service Provider, SIM or Corporation lock.

*#92782# – (Executes \Windows\uamgr.exe) Shows the UA profile settings.

*#232337# – (Executes \Windows\bthrftest.exe) Shows the Bluetooth RF tester and the device address.

*#32489# – (GSM test) Shows the ciphering status and options to enable or disable it.

*#7451# – (Nothing happens?)

*#7450# – (Nothing happens?)

*#2263# – (Executes \Windows\bandsel.exe -band) (GSM test) Shows the GSM band selection screen, with the options Automatic [default], GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900, 850/190 and 900/1800.

*#1234# – (Executes \Windows\KSReset.exe #Version) Shows the PDA and the Phone version number.

*#0782# – (Executes \Windows\RTCViewer.exe) Shows the Clock & Alarms settings.

*#0673# – (Executes \Windows\PlaySound.exe) Shows Audio sound tests.

*#9090# – (GSM test) UART/USB settings.

*#0842# – Shows tests for the Vibration, the Back Light and the Alert LED (Power buttton LED).

*#2580# – (GSM test) Integrity settings.

*#0228# – (GSM test) Shows the detailed GSM status: Antenna signal power, served network mode, temperature, Battery, Voltage (Antenna ADC test)

*#2222# – (GSM test) Shows the FTA hardware version.

*#1111# – (GSM test) Shows the FTA software version.

*#0011# – (Executes \Windows\TestMode.exe) (GSM test) Shows some more detailed GSM (Basic Information) status.

*#745# – Dumps SLOG, whatever it is, and shows a message.

*#06# – Shows IMEI number.

*#1*# – (Executes \Windows\Line_KeyTest.exe)

*#0*# – (Executes \Windows\LCDTest.exe) Shows a menu to test LCD colors, bootup melody, vibration, dimming, back camera, front camera, touchscreen, light sensor, sleep mode and mouse. The accelerometer data is also displayed at the bottom

iContacts for Samsung Omnia, replaces Phonebook

iContacts is a really good contact application for people who aren’t a  big fan of the one that Omnia came with. It emulates the iPhones’ contact list, and does it well. The application is fast & very clean looking- I didn’t come across any errors while testing this one out. I’ve definately unpinned Phonebook and replaced it with iContacts on my menu.

No Data

I installed this one only seconds ago & I’m already liking the idea of it.

GPRS on the Omnia connects very frequently to do small tasks such as check emails, updates & god knows what. This can get very annoying because GPRS data transfer = more cost.

I’m sure there are ways of stopping the GPRS from auto connecting (probably by going into every program on the phone & disabling it) but there is a quick & easy way instead!

No Data simply gives you a choice to toggle on/off connections. Sure, to go online via GPRS I’m gonig to have to open this program, toggle it on, then use the program I need- but it takes mere seconds & I’d prefer that than see my GPRS connection of hours long!!

i-nigma

I’m not sure if this is pronounced ‘eye-nigma’ or ‘i-nigma {as in i for igloo}’but either way…

This is my lattest ap. It is simpply a barcode reader, one of those QR2 barcode things.

The N95 & some other phones have this already- although not many people really know how to use it.
I installed this last night & tried out a few different barcodes and was seriously amazed at how fast this thing works. Some friends N95′s that I tried out we couldn’t get working after multiple attempts. With this one, it worked before even correctly lining it up- and then came up with a list of things that I could do. It is compatable with any piece of information, including web addresses.

A great ap! Especially seeming the phone has no inbuilt barcode reader- and already I’ve seen some ads on bus stops & simliar which incorporate this type of reader. I think this will be a useful ap to have!!

To download: Go to www.i-nigma.mobi on your mobile- the website will automatically recognise your phone type & redirect you to the correct page. (I find emailing myself this link then opening the email on the phone is easy).

Fring

Fring is a cool little ap that lets you keep connected in many different ways. Extending it’s reach to msn, yahoo, skype, mobile calls, sip, facebook and much more! Fring seems to be a cool little ap that is pretty useful.

Didn’t take long to setup at all & works fine on Wifi. Haven’t yet tried it on GPRS but I can’t imagine it chewing through to much data. Might have to give it a go later on.

It looks good, is stable & works fine. You do need to register- but that process is quick & painless. Also a point ot make- the more of your friends on Fring, the easier it is to connect with them. I suppose this is the (good) reason that Fring is free- to distribute & try to make it #1. I’m willing to help them out.

This also comes with a today-screen plugin which lets you know if it is running or not. I think this is cool, because as more & more people are using it on your list, then you’ll know if they can connect to you or not.

One of the best things about Fring is that I have been able to set up my Nodephone account on it- which means that I can make calls for free (that is, only pay for the data usage… i only recommend this when connected to a wifi network- Fring uses approx 8meg per hour on a call so may not be the best on GPRS).

Edit: The more I use this application the more I’m liking it. I know its probabyly an obvious thing to millions who potentialy read this- but when I set up Fring to make calls via my Nodephone account, it also receives incoming calls. This I REALLY like because it means that if I am expecting a call to my nodephone account (which i use for my business) then I can simply carry my mobile around with me. No more diverting calls here and there, or even voicemail. The call comes directly through to my mobile. It also rings at home, so if i’m there I can simply answer that. Either way- SIP on Fring is awesome

WM6 Remote

This one is for those who are a little more tech savvy. WM6 Remote (Windows Mobile 6 Remote) allows you to remotely access & control your computer.

This does not let you transfer files to & from your computer/mobile- although it does let you for example email a file from your computer to your mobile, etc.

I love this piece of software, as it lets me do things at home, when I’m not at home. While I don’t suggest overusing this application while on GPRS connection, it seems to work fine on WiFi.

Keep in mind, this is more of a techy application.

Once installed you need some information from your computer to be able to connect. The program will ask for

-Computer Name
-Username
-Password
-Domain

I’ll give you a quick run through, because it took me a few minutes to work out exactly what I need to do.

Computer name= Computers IP address. This is the simplest way to set it up. To find your IP address:
start>run>cmd>”ipconfig” this wil give you your IP address.

Username & password are what you use to login to your desktop. If you don’t have a username/pw then create a new login Simple.

Leave the domain blank. You won’t need this.

WM6 Remote gives you some good options & if running on the same network works really well. I’m yet to try it out while on another network, but I still love this piece of software!!
